This method is a permanent repair for bowed basement walls. It allows the homeowner to still finish the basement if they choose. Channel steel is an excellent choice when the wall is badly bowed, but it can be a costly option.
- Carbon fiber
Carbon fiber is a good choice for when the bowed basement walls are not particularly bad. It is very light and strong and has a low visibility when placed on the wall. This is also often less costly than the steel method.
The carbon fiber is in the form of long narrow strips which are attached to the wall with a strong epoxy. The fibers are placed vertically at intervals that are decided upon based on the amount of damage and size of the wall. These fibers are not breakable and will stabilize the wall. When finished, these carbon fibers are virtually undetectable and can be painted over.
- Helical ties
Helical ties are typically installed in deep soil that can resist the pressure, so the wall can be realigned. These ties will relieve the external pressure that is exerted on the wall. They can be used in addition to the carbon fibers when there is severe movement in the wall. The helical ties will provide additional stability.
This option is not suitable in all conditions. They need to be used in the right locations and with the right soil. In some cases, homeowners will not be able to use them because of how close their bowed basement walls are to their neighbor’s basement.
